Glenrothes & Central Fife MP Peter Grant has urged constituents to shop around before choosing a supplier to upgrade their fire alarms.

Mr Grant was speaking after an installation company distributed leaflets in his constituency implying that they carried an endorsement from the Scottish Government.

Mr Grant says that while there’s no suggestion that the company acted improperly, the Scottish Government has confirmed that it was a mistake to allow them to use the Scottish Government logo on their advertising literature.

Mr Grant also welcomed proposals to extend the legal deadline for the upgraded alarms to be installed.

Commenting, the Glenrothes and Central Fife MP said:

“The Scottish Government is urging everyone to make sure their homes are protected by fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors built and installed to the most modern standards. There are many companies able to do this work and my advice to constituents would always be to shop around and compare prices before you commit to anything.

Keeping people safe in their homes is vitally important but during the coronavirus pandemic it would have been difficult to make sure everyone could have their alarms upgraded before the original deadline. The Scottish Government are now proposing to extend the deadline to February 2022.”

Mr Grant is also reminding constituents that the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service is still offering free home safety checks for people who are particularly vulnerable. The visits have been reduced because of the pandemic but they are still being offered for anyone over the age of 50 who smokes and who either lives alone, has mobility problems, or uses medical oxygen. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service knows from tragic experience that these people are at particular risk from fire in the home, so they are still offering free safety checks for them.
